At the end of October he collapsed in his laboratory, the valves of his heart having given way. He was moved to hospital and the doctors gave him four hours to live. He survived and after a few days refused to stay in the hospital as he preferred to die in the gardens of his Institute surrounded by his flowers.


Two days before Raman died, he told one of his former students, "Do not allow the journals of the Academy to die, for they are the sensitive indicators of the quality of science being done in the country and whether science is taking root in it or not." That same evening, Raman met with the Board of Management of his Institute and discussed with them any proceedings with regards to the Institute’s management. Raman died from natural causes early next morning on 21 November 1970.

Sounding rockets are one or two stage solid propellant rockets used for probing the upper atmospheric regions and for space research. They also serve as easily affordable platforms to test or prove prototypes of new components or subsystems intended for use in launch vehicles and satellites. With the establishment of the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) in 1963 at Thumba, a location close to the magnetic equator, there was a quantum jump in the scope for aeronomy and atmospheric sciences in India. The launch of the first sounding rocket from Thumba near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on 21 November 1963, marked the beginning of the Indian Space Programme .

Harekrushna Mahtab was a freedom fighter, prolific writer, socialist and a leader of the masses. Popularly known as "Utkal Keshari", Harekrushna Mahatab was a contemporary of Orissa's towering leaders Gopabandhu Das and Nabkrushna Chowdary. He was a political genius and his diplomatic tactics made him to be ahead of many people in politics and excelled with supremacy over five decades.

Harekrushna Mahatab was born on 21st November 1899 at Agarpada village in Bhardrak District of Orissa. His parents were Keshucharan and Tohapha Devi. He completed his school education from Bhadrak High school and later shifted to Ravensha College, Cuttack to study I.Sc and graduation.
